Flinke Feder: Es wird langsam Zeit, dass ich aus meiner virtuellen Box heraussteige um diesen Blog etwas aufzufrischen. David, Du hattest ja keinen guten Start hingelegt. Eine Panne folgte der nächsten. Was hast Du für Schlüsse daraus gezogen?
David: Nach der ganzen Pannenserie und der darauffolgenden Reparatur habe ich gesehen, dass dieses Gefährt entgegen der Beteuerung des Herstellers nicht geeignet ist, um eine Weltreise zu unternehmen. Das Gewicht des Trikes alleine ist schon zu hoch, das ist viel zu massiv und nicht optimal gebaut, darum folgten auch die diversen Pannen. Ich werde mich nun für ein Gefährt umsehen, mit dem es möglich ist.
FF: Glaubst Du immer noch an das Prinzip der solaren Batterieaufladung?

David: After the whole series of breakdown and subsequent repair, I've seen that this vehicle is in contrary to the reaffirmation of the manufacturer not suitable to take a trip around the world. The weight of the trike is already too high. It is far too massive and not optimally constructed, therefore also the various mishaps followed. I'll look around now for a new vehicle, with which the trip is possible.
PP: Do you believe in the principle of solar battery charging still?
DB: Dem Prinzip werde ich treu bleiben, das ist auch der ganze Aufhänger der Reise.
FF: Die Reise willst Du also fortsetzen?
DB: Vorerst werde ich mit dem Solatrike weiterfahren, soweit ich komme, oder es sich in seine einzelnen Bestandteile zerlegt. Aber nebenbei werde ich versuchen ein neues Gefährt zu organi-sieren.
FF: Würdest Du dann mit dem neuen Gefährt gleich weiterfahren?
DB: Erst muss ich eines haben, aber sehr wahrscheinlich wird ein Neues nicht gleich irgendwo auf mich warten. Ich werde die Reise dann einfach den Gegebenheiten anpassen. Auf jeden Fall werde ich im Herbst nach Kiruna fahren (mit welchen Transport-mitteln auch immer) und da den Winter verbringen. Ich hoffe dann auf den nächsten Frühling ein geeignetes Gefährt gefunden zu haben.
FF: Was macht das Solatrike denn so umständlich zum Fahren?
DB: Das ganze Gewicht. Ich habe unterdessen das Gewicht des Gepäcks so minimiert, dass nun das Gefährt total so viel wiegt, wie es als Rikscha mit zwei Personen als Gäste konzipiert ist. Aber trotzdem ist das Fahren einer jeden Steigung ein grosses Risiko überhaupt oben anzukommen bevor die Sicherungen der Batterien wieder durchbrennen. Das ist eigentlich nicht der Sinn der Sache. Jede Unebenheit schlägt so fest in die Räder, dass es nur eine Frage der Zeit ist, bis die rechte Seite der Achse auch bricht – oder die linke Seite nochmals.
FF: Wieso sollte die Achse nochmals brechen?
DB: Das ist auch einer der Konstruktionsfehler. Das Rad ist nur auf einer Seite aufgehängt und eine zu grosse Hebelwirkung des Gewichtes von oben und die Schläge von unten ermüden das Material auf die Dauer. Darum kriege ich bei jeder Unebenheit fast einen Herzinfarkt.
FF: Das ist auch kein entspanntes Fahren mehr möglich.
DB: Nein, vollkommen nicht. Ich bin ziemlich verspannt, dafür sollte es doch eher eine entspannende Reise sein.
FF: Wie verhält es sich unterdessen mit der Stabilität?
DB: Die ist mit den kleineren Rädern schon besser geworden, aber ich selbst sitze immer noch zu hoch oben und wackle, wie ein Wackeldackel bei jeder Strassenebenänderung. Dazu klappert die Federung bei jeder Unebenheit, wie ein mehrfaches Echo nach …ach …ach …ach.
FF: Vergeht so die Freude am Fahren?
DB: Ja, es nervt mich schon bei schönstem Wetter, wie wird es dann erst bei Regen sein?
FF: Darauf habe ich doch keine Antwort, ich bin hier für die Fragen zuständig.
DB: Dann frag doch was, anstelle eine Antwort zu suchen.
FF: Wodurch bist Du nach der grossen Reparatur gefahren, die Du in Herlikofen bei Christof gemacht hast?
DB: Erst muss ich erwähnen, dass Christof den grossen Teil der Reparatur selbst gemacht hat und dem ganzen Dank gebührt. Von Herlikofen bei Schwäbisch-Gmünd bin ich via Schorndorf, Remshalden und Waiblingen über den Neckar und anschliessend über die Felder nach Ludwigsburg bei Stuttgart gefahren. Dort hatte ich Stefan getroffen, den ich vor elf Jahren im Süden von Chile kennen gelernt hatte. Wir folgten einer Schlossführung, bevor ich mich wieder auf den Sattel schwang.
Weiter radelte ich über Bietigheim und Sersheim durch weitere kleine Dörfer bis zum Campingplatz bei Knittlingen wo ich einen Tag Pause einlegte, um etwas die Gegend zu Fuss zu erkunden.
Ausgeruht fuhr ich darauf via Bretten nach Bruchsal, wo ich die hübsche Kirche besichtigte. Danach gelangte ich via Forst und einer weiteren Irrfahrt schliesslich zum Rhein, den ich bei Speyer überquerte und danach so direkt wie möglich nach Ludwigshafen.
FF: Hast Du hier auch Bekannte besucht?
DB: Hier in Ludwigshafen kam ich bei Robert unter, den ich damals mit Stefan kennen lernte.
FF: Wie geht es nun weiter?
DB: Nächste Station wird Mainz sein und danach werde ich weiter schauen wie es so flach wie möglich weiter geht.

PP: Would you continue then the travel with the new vehicle?
DB: First I must have one, but very likely a new one is not ready waiting for me somewhere. I will then simply modify the journey to the conditions. In any case, I'm going in the fall to Kiruna (with whatever transport means), and then spend the winter there. I hope to have found a suitable vehicle until the next spring.
PP: What is so cumbersome to drive the Solatrike?
DB: All the weight. Meanwhile I have minimized the weight of my baggage that the vehicle weighs now totally as much, as it is designed for like a rickshaw with two people as guests. But the driving of up each hill is a big risk to arrive before the fuses of the battery drop out. Actually, this is not meaning as it should be. Every unevenness of the street beats so tight into the wheels that it is only a matter of time until the right side of the axle also breaks - or the left side again.
PP: Why should the axle break again?
DB: This is also one of the design flaws. The wheel is mounted only on one side and too much leverage of the weight from above and the punches from the bottom will break material in the long run. Therefore, I get almost a heart attack at every bump.
PP: There is no relaxed driving as well.
DB: No, absolutely not. I'm pretty tense; it should be rather a relaxing trip.
PP: How it behaves in the meantime, with the stability?
DB: It has become even better with the smaller wheels, but I'm sitting always still too high above and shake like a wobbling pudding whenever the Street level is changing. The suspension rattles at each bump as a multiple echo as well... ell... ell... ell.
PP: Do you lose the joy of driving?
DB: Yes, it's bugging me at wonderful weather, how it will be when it rains?
PP: I have no answer yet, I am responsible for the questions here.
DB: Then ask something, rather than to search a response.
PP: Which way did you go after the large repair, which you did in Herlikofen at Christof?
DB: I must mention that Christof has made most of the repair himself and deserves all thanks. I went from Herlikofen in Schwäbisch Gmünd via Schorndorf, Remshalden and Waiblingen over the River Neckar and then over the fields to Ludwigsburg near Stuttgart. There, I met Stefan, whom I had met 11 years ago in the South of Chile. We followed a tour of the Castle, before I rode on.
Further I cycled about Bietigheim and Sersheim by other small villages up to the campsite in Knittlingen, where I took a day off, to explore the area by foot a bit.
Rested I went on via Bretten to Bruchsal, where I visited the lovely Church. Then I got via Forst and a further Odyssey finally to the Rhine, which I crossed at Speyer and then directly to Ludwigshafen.
PP: Did you visit here also someone you know?
DB: Here in Ludwigshafen I stood at Robert, I met with Stefan in the south of Chile.
PP: What's next now?
DB: Next station will be Mainz and then I will look where the road will lead me as flat as possible.
